Rome 2022 at Expo 2020 Dubai

Andrea Pieri, president of Roma 2022 and vice-president of Federnuoto, and Bruno Campanile, executive director of Roma 2022, participated in the event "L'Italia mondiale dello Sport e dei Grandi Eventi" at Expo 2020 in Dubai to explain the objectives and the steps towards the European Aquatics Championships élite and master, scheduled in Rome and Ostia next August.

The representatives of Rome 2022 brought greetings from Paolo Barelli, the President of Federnuoto, who was busy with urgent parliamentary activities. Their partecipation was considered central to celebrating the sports disciplines, the athletes and the excellence of a sector that is an ambassador of beauty and innovation in the world and to raise attention to Rome's candidature process to host Expo 2030.
Supported by a presentation and by a series of videos, the president of Roma 2022 Pieri and the director Campanile underlined the ancestral link between Rome and water and the goals that encouraged the Federnuoto to put itself forward as a candidate for the organisation of the 36th edition of the European Aquatics Championships, bringing benefits in terms of image for the local area and promotion of aquatic disciplines.
A major international aquatic event returns to Rome after the 1983 continental edition, the 1960 Olympic Games and the 1994 and 2009 World Championships.

1,500 athletes and 8,000 masters from 52 countries are expected to take part in the event. Various swimming pools have been selected for competitions and training, including the Parco del Foro Italico, the federal centres of Ostia, Pietralata and Valco San Paolo, as well as other renovated and completed facilities, which will remain at the service of the citizens.
A number of projects have been set up to bring the event closer to fans and practitioners, including contests, competitions and campaign to promote the artistic and scenic beauty of the local area.

During the speech, President Pieri and Director Campanile thanked the Commissioner General of Italy at Expo 2020 Paolo Glisenti for the invitation. They also expressed their gratitude to the Department for Sport of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, the Regione Lazio, Roma Capitale and Sport e Salute for their support and closeness, and expressed their satisfaction with the organisational process and reiterated their commitment to ensuring the success of the event.
