ITALY ANNOUNCE STRONG SWIMMING TEAM FOR ROMA 2022
The nation's swimming team that will host the 36th European Aquatics Championships has been
announced. There are 58 athletes who have been called up to join the Italian squad, 34 men and 24
women: from the team’s youngest swimmer Lorenzo Galossi, born in 2006, to captain Fabio Scozzoli, who
will turn 34 years old on 4 August.
The men’s 100m backstroke world record holder Thomas Ceccon, the Olympic champion and European
record holder in the 800m and 1500m freestyle Gregorio Paltrinieri, the men's and women's number one
breaststroke swimmers Nicolò Martinenghi and Benedetta Pilato, who is also European record holder in the
50m breaststroke, and the 4×100m mixed relay gold medallists Federico Burdisso and Alessandro Miressi
could not be missing from the list. Simona Quadarella, born in Rome, will swim in front of her own public to
defend her European title in the 400m, 800m and 1500m freestyle.
There will be many young emerging talents, including twins Antonietta and Noemi Cesarano, Antonella
Crispino, Sofia Morini, and Chiara Tarantino, born in 2003. Luca Pizzini, Ilaria Bianchi, Martina Rita
Caramignoli, Martina Carraro and the Roman Silvia Di Pietro will return to competing in the swimming pool
of the Stadio del Nuoto, after the 2009 world championships.
At Roma 2022 Italy's goal is to get the backing of home support to jump on the success started at the
Budapest world championships, where the Azzurri of swimming earned first place in the medal table among
European nations and third overall behind the United States and China.
