FINA Marathon Swim World Series: Olympic test event in Paris, world champion Paltrinieri (ITA) wins gold again
Some of the world's best open water swimmers competed at the FINA Marathon Swim World Series 2022,
which took place on 9 and 10 July in Paris, the city that will host the next Olympic Games in 2024.
One week after the end of the world championships in Budapest, Italian star Gregorio Paltrinieri continues
his winning streak. In the French capital, the European record holder dominated both events in which he
competed. In the men's 10km, he striked gold in 1:51:37.85 with a decisive push in the final straight. Behind
him Hungarian Kristof Rasovszky (1:51:38.98) placed second and Australian Nicholas Sloman, third in
1:51:41.95.
Paltrinieri also claimed a second gold the following day in the 4x1500m mixed relay, together with
Budapest’s 25km world champion Dario Verani, the women’s 5km world bronze medallist Giulia
Gabbrielleschi and Martina De Memme. The Italian team won thanks to a decisive acceleration in the last
two men’s legs with an overall time of 1:07:51.74.
Australia beat the other participating Italian squad, consisting of Barbara Pozzobon, Pasquale Sanzullo,
Andrea Manzi and Ginevra Taddeucci, at the photofinish with 1:08:03.75. In the individual event of the
women's 10km female, the Tuscan athlete Taddeucci took bronze in 2:00:35.99, behind the Dutch Sharon
Van Rouwendaal, silver in 2:00:35.77.
The French team, with world medallists Aurelie Muller and Axel Reymond, failed to catch up with the
leading group, finishing fifth (1:09:31.55) behind Spain, fourth in 1:09:30.97.
