Historic gold for Constantin Popovici (ROU) in high diving: "Today I was the best"

Two Popovicis passed the baton. Roma 2022 seems to have brought good luck to Romania both for David, who a few days ago set a world record in the pool in the men’s 100m freestyle while also dominating the 200m, and for Constantin, today's winner of the men's high diving in the discipline's first time at a European championships.

What do this medal mean to you?

"This gold is very special to me. I was the best one today. I'm not too emotional right now, too much adrenaline still, but I'm happy to have made history today. I think everyone would have liked to compete in this competition that will be remembered forever.”

Do you think you are a role model for young people approaching high diving?

“I like thinking of myself as a role model for the kids. For me Gary Hunt and Orlando Duque have been inspirational in trying this sport that is growing. I hope the next step is the Olympics.”

Do you know world champion and world record holder David Popovici?

“With David we have known each other for a couple of years, we are from the same city, Bucharest. We trained in the same facilities. The first day I arrived in Rome, I met him. He was with his family and staff. We complimented each other.”

How come you speak Italian?

"I did work in Italy for many years in the summer. Where I use to practise my diving in Torvaianica. I have a lot of friends and I often travel to Italy. Rome has been in my heart, at the 2009 world championships when I competed in the final of the men’s 10m platform and I am always happy to come back here. I like speaking Italian, it's a beautiful language."
